After barely escaping the perilous expedition to the Antarctic to locate a WW2 Nazi Ice Station Dave Purdue once more elicits the help of historian Dr. Nina Gould and award winning investigative journalist Sam Cleave. When the maintenance submersible from Purdue’s oil drill, Deep Sea One, goes missing off the coast of Scotland in the North Sea, he discovers the wreck of a sunken WWII German submarine beneath.

Inside, Purdue, Sam and Nina find an ancient book containing various ciphers and clues implicating the location of one of Hitler’s most sought after relics, the legendary Spear of Destiny. With Purdue’s new and mysterious bodyguard, Calisto, they hire a guide and set out to the breath taking beauty and danger of the mighty Tibetan Himalayas to seek out a shrine mentioned in the antique book. They manage to obtain an important clue before having to escape the wrath of the mountain shrine’s guardians.

When unexplained freak storms start to plague the offshore oil platform, some of the crew fear that something ancient and powerful is at work. The discovery of an antique Roman chest reveals what Nina, Sam and Purdue may have been looking for, but is it the real thing or is it a decoy? While examining the artifact, Nina realizes that there is much more to the legendary sovereignty of the Spear and the real reasons why Hitler coveted it.

But with the British Secret Service infiltrating Purdue’s consorts and the notorious Order of the Black Sun making their appearance, there is another kind of storm brewing on the horizon. A menacing and primordial tempest from obscurity is creeping over the North Sea to engulf Deep Sea One.

Deep Sea One leads the reader on a roller-coaster ride in search of a legend. Packed with breathtaking suspense and nerve-shredding action, Deep Sea One is a thrilling read for all fans of action, suspense, and intrigue.

A word from the author Hello and thank you for your interest in my book. It has come to my attention that some people have been mistaking my books for those written by the famous author duo Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child. This is not the case. I wish to clarify that I am not, by any means, related to Douglas Preston or Lincoln Child, Lee Child or any other author called Preston Child. I hope this clears up the confusion.

Deep Sea One (Order of the Black Sun Series Book 2) - edition by P.W. Child. Literature & Fiction eBooks @ . Reviews

I was relieved to discover this wasn't written by Preston & Child despite the misleading listing (it showed up on a search for Douglas Preston). It reads like the outline of a Dirk Pitt story was handed off to an eager creative writing undergrad. The characters rush from plot point to plot point, only stopping for brief explorations in which they're ready to abandon each search at the first hint of frustration. For example, they travel to the other side of the earth to find an object, reach the place where it should be, look around for an hour or so, shrug their shoulders and prepare to leave. Weird!

I do credit this book for creating the most obnoxious woman character in recent fiction. She's a petulant, foot-stamping moron prone to inexplicable, shouting tantrums whenever the situation demands silence at peril of death. She's an expert in Nazi history who's unaware that the Nazis had an interest in the occult. Naturally, the male characters find her adorable. To be fair, they're equally cliched. Credit where due theres's a bondian, badass female bodyguard with a little bit of cool, and what's best is that her behavior is consistent throughout the story. It's clear this writer has it in him to write decent thriller characters, and I hope he does so. The outline a far as thrillers go is pretty good; it's just the execution that needs work.

If I hadn't bought this book on false pretenses I might have had more tolerance for it. The way this series is listed on implies this is a Preston & Child novel and I slogged through the first one and this one, really puzzled and annoyed at how bad they were, before I discovered my mistake.
Because they were free, through Unlimited, I read this book and also the first in the series. I confess to thinking that the author was trying to present protagonists who were quirky and would become engaging ( a la Hercule Poirot or Aloyisious Pendergast). I was wrong. This author has succeeded in creating a cast of characters who are selfish, narrsisistic, irrational, bigoted, arrogant, snide, self-serving, petty and just plain mean. And I'm not referring to just one character...I'm referring to ALL the characters. The only slightly decent characters are a cat and a detective that plays a microscopic role in both books. Otherwise, there isn't a single character that is even minimally likable, and the female protagonist "Nina" is just a big bag of ugly the male protagonists are supposed to find desirable. Sure, because every man finds (and I'm using words from the book) a woman who "hisses", "shrieks", "moans", "snaps", "screams" & "spits" at her male counterparts to be the woman of their dreams.

Unfortunately, you will need to add terrible editing and a hackneyed storyline to this ick soup of a book. Some sections of the book went into yawning and unnecessary detail about something totally irrelevant, while others seemed completely stunted..as if someone just hacked out a section of the book (which is likely exactly the case).

Last, but not least, the editing was TERRIBLE! The worst I have seen in a very long time.

Don't waste your money on this author's books. Even if you can get them for free, don't bother. Even if you think you like books where you hate all the characters, don't read this book. The stink is just too much to get past.

Read a REAL book by a CHILD named LINCOLN (not PW), and you will read a gripping, wonderful book, and not a travesty.

I wish I could give this book NO stars and I'm appalled this author playing upon the CHILD name.
This book has a more or less good plot, but it reads like it was never edited, and it's wrapped up in a few pages. Also, this is some guy benefiting from his name/pseudonym "Preston Child", this is NOT Douglas Preston & Lincoln Child, which I thought, and which was the reason I bothered buying the book at all.
I purchased book 1 in this series because it came in my recommended list as "New from Preston AND Child" (even the booksellers had it wrong initially) so I bought it without even reading the description because, hey Preston & Child can turn a phone book into a rollercoaster of a read. I soon learned however it was NOT written by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child but instead by someone writing under the name Preston Child (in an attempt to ride the coattails of the greats?), now going by P.W. Child. The first book was far from perfect, but it had some strong elements so I purchased the second. Unfortunately, instead of improving, the writing seems to have unraveled. While the story is still fairly interesting, the pacing is inconsistent and one of the main characters seems to go off the rails from strong and intelligent to shrill and annoying. The story was filled with gaps that made it very easy for the author to move the story along, but as the reader the gaps are glaring and make the story wholly unbelievable.
Horrible ending to a decent tale with poor writing and shoddy editing. The first half of the book is overworked and overwritten. Then, the storyline picks up to the point that I had to keep turning back to see if I had somehow missed a chapter. Finally, the ending is wrapped up in less than 4 pages. What a waste of time!
I have read all the other books by Preston and Child, and this one must have been written by an imposter. The style is that of a very stupid freshman who is definitely failing his class. First, it is full of excessive verbiage. Totally inappropriate and ludicrous adjectives and adverbs are included in every sentence, leading me to occasionally laugh out loud at their ridiculousness. I won't comment on the illogical and mystifying plot. Please, pass this one by and read one of their genuine books.
